Everyone associates employment with wealth and financial security, but what if you found out your job could be costing you more than you ever realised? It seems working comes with additional hidden costs that you don’t take into account before commencing employment. There are however, ways of cutting down the expenses which cost you most when working.

Food

It seems many people who find themselves out of pocket have eyes bigger than their wallets. Food is one of the biggest temptations of working life. Canteens, vending machines, local convenience stores, fast-food chains and cafés make their money off hungry workers on a daily basis. Not only is a large proportion of convenience food unhealthy, it also costs around 3 times as much as a homemade packed lunch.

To avoid being tempted by costly food outlets, always take sufficient amounts of food to work with you. You can purchase high quality meat and bread for sandwiches from the supermarket for less than bland canteen food often served at work. Be sure to purchase enough lunch food for the working week to avoid mid-week food trips.

Advertisements

If you job involves spending a considerable amount of time on the internet, you’ll know exactly how many advertisements and promotional emails you receive in a day. With technology allowing consumers to buy almost anything on the internet, purchases on your credit card can mount up without you realising. Although an unsecured bad credit loan can help you if you find yourself in financial difficulty, it’s best to avoid getting there in the first place.

If you’re bombarded with promotional emails, direct them straight to your junk folder before reading them to avoid temptation. Try to limit your internet usage and only visit the pages relevant to your work, browsing through retail websites significantly increases the likelihood of excessive spending.

Travel

Although travel expenses are unavoidable when getting to work it’s worth researching cheaper methods, particularly if you live a fair distance from work. Some people find it’s cheaper to catch a train with a monthly pass rather than run a car. If you really need a car ask around the workplace to see if anyone lives nearby and suggest sharing car journeys and split the costs.

If you’re really struggling with the costs of travelling to and from work you could speak to your superior as there may be a possibility of working from home for a proportion of the week. It’s not uncommon for this to happen due to inflated insurance and fuel costs that many workers are suffering from.

Working life can prove to be costly if poor personal budgeting takes place. If you’re not in charge of your finances you could find yourself out of money before your next wage. Use online banking to track your expenditure and plan your budget for the month on the day of each payment, to be in sound control of your finances.
