Credit Lawyers – Why Should I Get One?

The simple answer is because your credit score is such an important and life altering number! Think about all the things that are influenced by your credit history. Every purchase you make when you are financing which is any major purchase such as a home, car, boat … where you live, if you’re renting or own, and it is becoming increasingly popular for potential employers to perform credit checks.

Can I Fix My Credit Myself?

Yes, you can do it yourself. It does however require you to be persistent and organized. This is because you must dispute each item with each credit bureau separately. For example if you have a charge off on a credit card on your report, you must write a dispute letter to TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian. In other words you will write 3 letters one to each bureau to dispute this item.

You will have to be persistent because often the credit bureaus will respond to a dispute with a letter asking you for more information. This is a stall tactic the bureaus use to try and get you to give up on disputing this item. Unfortunately the credit bureaus have no financial incentive to perform an investigation into a dispute.

In fact instead it causes them to spend potential profits. The bureaus sell the information they collect about you to businesses and lenders. It doesn’t matter to their financial motives if this information is correct or not. In fact the bureaus have been fined time and time again by the Federal Government for not complying with the Fair Credit Reporting Act. This is the piece of legislation that gives you the right to dispute items on your report.

Is It Expensive?

It does cost money, however it will be the cheapest Lawyer you ever pay for. You should expect to pay an upfront or down payment of roughly $100. You also will have a monthly payment from $49 – $99. You should expect it to take anywhere from 6 – 12 months.

This cost seems reasonable especially compared to a life of high interest rates and potential denials for 7 – 10 years. Further, with a good credit score you will be able to improve your quality of life. You will get lower interest rates; you can qualify for a home loan, or an auto loan.

We hear about individuals stuck paying 20% an upwards on auto loans and the money they just throw out the window is stomach turning. Instead spend that money on fixing your credit history and then you can keep that money in the future or spend it on family vacations!
