When you want to sell your property, the house needs to look presentable in order to add value to your home and catch the attention of a buyer. But you don’t have to fork out on expensive developments to do this. There are ways in which you can improve your house without breaking the bank.

Redecorating can have more of a dramatic effect than you may have imagined and costs a fraction of the cost of conversions and extensions, and can increase the value of your home. If you don’t have savings, you could remortgage to invest a small amount in redecoration.

When picking the colour schemes for your rooms, remember that not everyone has the same tastes so it’s best to keep it neutral in order to avoid putting prospective buyers off. These also make the house look bright and airy. Avoid primary colours at all costs!

There is no harm in adding a little splash of colour here and there, but make sure that it is done tastefully and try feature walls rather than entire rooms in colours likes reds, greens and blues. Make sure that all of the colours complement one another too in order to avoid decor disasters.

Consider how the rooms are laid out to get maximum effect. Cluttered rooms appear not so big and so you should remove as much furniture as possible. If you have children, make sure all toys are tidied away. The same goes for any unused items as they can make the place look messy.

Replacing entire suites can cost an arm and a leg, so it may be better to update them by keeping them sparkly clean and tidy. Keep toiletries stored away and maybe even go over the tiles with a lick of tile paint to keep them looking new. Fresh grout can also make a big difference.

New taps, toilet seats and shower heads can add to the feel of a bathroom so consider doing this as cheap way of updating the look.

Make sure that the doors and windows are all neat and any wooden frames should be painted to keep them looking new. Ensure that all handles are working and replace any that are not. If you have the money, you could replace them although this can be costly.

If you have any rooms with small windows and very little light, consider placing a lamp in the room to make it appear brighter. Also strategically placing mirrors so that they reflect natural light can really help to brighten the darkest of rooms.

And don’t abandon the outside. Make sure that the driveway and garden are neat. Don’t forget the front of the house too. Wooden window and door frames can be painted or stained, and if you have a garage door consider painting over this too.
